Evaluation of School magazine front cover

Evaluation

Front Page
In my magazine cover I have put my masthead ' Palmer Line'  at the top so that it is the first thing everyone sees and that they know which magazine it is. I chose to call my magazine this because the word' Palmer' has the word 'Palm' in it, and I think that when people see the word 'Palm' they would think of a tropical place with palm trees. I also put a sub-heading on my magazine cover which reads, “Specializing in performing arts and humanities.” This was to inform readers what the specialties of the school are, so that those who want to take part in these things know that, this is the school to attend. I also have logos of the school specialties to accompany the sub-heading and an Ofsted school award to show that the school has been seen as outstanding by inspectors. I also put the school's address, telephone number and email address so that people can contact the school if they have any questions or inquiries, but when I uploaded it onto my blog, the email address of the school was cut out, this was possibly because I set the email address outside the lines of the page.

In my magazine cover I have added an image of a student in their school surroundings to show how students feel in the school, give the idea that students work hard and enjoy the school and to also show the kinds of resources available for them. I have also put it in the top left corner so that the student is featured but to also follow the eye movement 'Z' from left to right, then across and left to right again. I will also put an image of the school building to advertise the building, I did this because I believe that it will attract more people because of the fact that it is a new building and looks very modern. My text will surround both images so that there is a balance of text and image to suit a wide range of people as this is what I found that most people wanted from my interviews and questionnaires. From my research I also found that my target audience wanted bright colours which is why I used yellow, blue  and white as my colour scheme.

For my cover lines I changed the colour of the text box from white to blue, the font from black to yellow and added a yellow text-box outline for the most important  stories, but for the other stories I changed the text from black to white and added a white text-box outline. I did this so that the more important stories stood out and were seen before the other stories as yellow stands out more than white. I changed these feature because I felt that the magazine looked plain and simple, I also felt that it looked empty and realised that I needed to add more stories so I looked at the features that I listed in my contents page and used some in my front cover.

Contents Page
For my contents page I decided to use the same colours that used in my front page as those colours were part of my colour scheme and I did not want to make my magazine look messy and disorganized by using lots of different colours. In my contents page I made the text- boxes yellow whilst the headings were blue and the page numbers were black. I placed the heading 'Contents' down the side of the page in bold blue letters and the background was yellow, again this was sticking to the colour scheme.

I placed two pictures in my contents page to make it look more interesting. I was only able to place two pictures in my contents as I felt that I did not have images that were suitable for my headings.  One of my images was of a student using an Apple Mac, the mise-en-scene this gives is that the school has high-tech facilities available for students to use. The other image that I used was of the school's sixth form building and the outside area; the mise-en- scene for this image is that the students of the school have a modernised building with beautiful surroundings available for them.

Final Evaluation
My magazine is good compared to established magazines such as Plumline, which is Plumstead Manor school's magazine, because it is very well set out and has a set colour scheme just like Plumline magazine. My magazine represents my target audience well because the majority of them are young so would want brighter colours, which is why I used yellow, blue and white. My target audience would also want to see things about other students in the magazine for personal identity and inter-personal relationships, and have updates on the school for surveillance but would also want competitions and opportunities to go on trips and win prizes as divergence to keep their minds off of school and as a way of stress relief. By making this magazine I have learnt how to edit pictures, which is very important because when it comes time for me to make my music magazine I will already know how to edit the images for it. When shown my finished product, members of my target audience thought that the features in my contents page were very interesting and suitable as they thought that they would be good for them as students to get to know more about the school and it's subjects and it facilities, they also thought that it was good how I added a competitions page were readers could win prizes as they found it would be engaging. My target audience found that my front cover looked a little bit plain and could have used more features such as a small image but they liked the way I had set it out.

Image evaluation

This is another image of the school's sixth form block in wide shot but in a different angle. I decided to use this image even though it looks crooked and dark, I decided to turn the image so it looks straight and edit it so it doesn't look so dark. This is an image that I took of the outside of my school's sixth form building. I chose this building as it is one of the school's newest buildings and it looks very modern. I believe this image will attract young readers which is good as my target audience starts from the age of 11 upwards. The mise-en-scene that this image gives is that, students have a large and modern building to work in but it also gives a bad feel to readers as the image is dark so makes the school look gloomy.

This is an image that I took of the outside of my school's sixth form building in a wide shot. I chose this building as it is one of the school's newest buildings and it looks very modern. I wanted to use this image as it captures not only the building but the outside area so that people can see all the changes made to the area. The miss-en-scene that this image gives is that, the students are working in a beautiful and modern environment as you are able to see the new school building as well as the outside area which shows trees that are growing, the image is also bright and the outside looks clean so it gives the viewers a positive feel about the school.
I used this image as the main feature of a student in medium close up. I had to crop the image and crop one of the girls out because it was not in medium close up plus, one of the girls has her head turned to the camera, I also had to sharpen the image and make it look brighter as it looks dark so it is difficult to see the girl's face.  The mise-en-scene that this image gives is that, the students in the school are happy with the environment that they work in as I have captured them in there natural environment so it doesn't look posed and fake, this makes it believable and people who would read this magazine would think that this is the truth about the school.

This is an image of a student in medium shot using the school's Apple Macs. I used this image as I felt that it would be good to focus on the facilities the school has as well as the students as I thought that people would want to know more about what the school has to offer. The mise-en-scene this gives is that the school has high-tech facilities available for students to use because it shows a student using an Apple mac, but the image allows you to focus more on the mac as you are unable to see the students face. This image will meet my target audience's needs of  divergence as this allows them to keep an eye on things going on around school.
